We are hiking on the Russian General Alexander Suvorov's route over the Alps that he was crossing with his army from mid-September to mid-October in 1799. Of 22 000 soldiers after four weeks there were only 14,000 survivors. Half of the animals and all of the heavy military equipment were lost. The battles with the French troops, crashes in the high alpine terrain, cold and hunger decimated the Russian troops. The onset of winter was very early in 1799.
The purpose of undertaking a march over the Gotthard to Zurich was to expel the French out of Switzerland. That, however, failed because the French removed the boats to Flüelen.
The troops of Russian general Korsakov were beaten by General Massena near Zurich on the 25th-26th of September. Suvorov learned about the defeat in Muotathal.
Suvorov's army consisted of many peoples: Russians, Cossacks, Kalmyk, Tatar. With the civil population the soldiers usually behaved properly. They have stolen only if they were hungry.
Day 1 till Day 11
Flight from Moscow to Zurich, connecting flight to Agno (Lugano), arriving around noon. By bus from Agno over the Passo Monte Ceneri (1395 m) to Bellinzona. Hike (hike for familiarization ) in the valley of the Ticino or the Moesa. Overnight in Bellinzona. Map 276 T.
Day 2
From Bellinzona via Airolo by bus to the Val Tremola (50 km). Ascent from Motto di Dentro (1690 m) up to Gotthard Pass (2091 m) by the footpath beside the old (untrafficked) Gotthard road. From Gotthard Pass by bus to Andermatt (15 km). Overnight in Andermatt (1438 m). Map 265 T and 255 T.
At the Gotthard Pass, the French were defeated on September 24th, 1799.
From Andermatt (1438 m) on foot by the footpath or just along the road No. 2 to Göschenen (1196 m). Along this way the Devil's Bridge (1405 m) will be crossed over the Schöllen Canyon . The distance from Andermatt to Göschenen is 5 km. From Göschenen by bus on the road No. 2 or on A2 in the valley of the Reuss via Wassern, Gurtnellen, Amsteg, Silenen, Erstfeld down to Altdorf (543 m). The distance from Göschenen to Altdorf is 30 km. Circular walk from Flüelen to Urner lake and back (8 km). Overnight in Altdorf. Map 255 T, 256 T, 246 T.
In Flüelen there was no way for Suvorov to cross Lake Lucerne for reaching Brunnen. The French had removed all boats. Therefore, Suvorov decided to take the way over the Chinzig Pass.
Destination of this day is the Lidernen Hut (1727 m) of the SAC, in which we will stay. Who is experienced in mountain hiking will go on a very long day trip on the original Suvorov path from Altdorf (543 m) via Bürglen up to the Chinzig Chulm-Pass (2073 m). Then further on a side-trip on a steep road via the Rossstocklücke (2288) down to the Lidernen Hut (1727 m).
Less experienced hiking group drives by bus from Altdorf via Flüelen, Sisikon, Riemenstalden to the cable car station Chäppeliberg (1184 m). The cable car brings this group up to the summit station (1716 m). From there we will take a short walk to the Lidernen Hut (1727 m). Map 246 T.
Day 5
The destination of this day is a small village of Muotathal. The hiking group I walks in the northeast direction through the valley of Goldplangg from the Lidernen Hut (1727 m) down to Muotathal (645 m).
At the end of the valley in the direction of Schwyz, at the bridge now named after Suvorov, the Russians could not force the passage. Therefore, Suvorov commanded to march over the Pragelpass into the Glarnerland.
The hiking group II continues by the cable car to the valley station Chäppeliberg (1184 m). There the bus is waiting for them. From Via Sisikon and Schwyz the bus with the hiking group II drives to the overnight accommodation place at Muotathal (645 m). Map 246 T.
Day 6
The route from Muotathal (645 m) over the Pragelpass (1550 m) to Richigsau (1102 m) is long (25 km) but easy. The hiking group I can go on this way without an alpine guide. Either we stay in Richigsau, or the bus picks up the hiking group I from there and brings to the nearby Glarus. The bus with the hiking group II must drive a longer way: Muotathal, Schwyz, Rothenthurm, Biberbrugg, Weesen, Näfels, Glarus, Richigsau. If we stay in Glarus, the bus will leave the walking group II at the hotel in Glarus before he picks up the hiking group I in Richigsau. Map 246 T and 236 T.
In Klöntal lake the war chest was dumped by the Russians. This rumor still inspires the imagination of many treasure hunters today. Suvorov arrived at Glarus on October1, 1799.
Day 7
Destination of this day is Elm. The group spend the night in Richigsau or Glarus. From Glarus (523 m) the entire group hikes 8 km via Unter Rütli (672 m) to Schwanden (527 m). In Schwanden the bus is waiting for us. If time permits we will visit the Museum of Suvorov in Schwandern before the departure of the bus to Elm. The museum contains the historical collection of the alpine trail of the Russian general in 1799. Via Engi, Matt and Trämligen the bus brings us through the valley of Sernf to Elm (975 m). The length of the route is 15 km. We stay at Elm. Map 236 T and 247 T.
Day 8
On day 8 again the two hiking groups will be separated. From Elm (975 m), first of all, the bus goes to the military facility Walenbrugg (1297 m). Here the hiking group I leave the bus and ascent with an alpine guide to Panixer Pass (2407 m). On the descent to the south it goes down to the small village of Pigniu / Panix (1329 m). Here they will wait for the bus. From there the bus brings the walking group I to Flims / Flem (1059 m). The travel group II passes by the Flumser mountains and the Glarus Alps during the following route: Walenburg, Steinibach, Elm, Schwanden, Glarus, Näfels, Weesen, Bellis, Flums, Sargans, Chur, Domat/Ems, Reichenau, Flims. The group will stay at the hotel in Flims, before the bus driver picks up the hiking group II to Pigniu / Panix. Map 247 T.
Because the foray into the direction of Lake Zurich was stopped by the French close to Näfels, Suvorov was forced to descent over the already snow-covered Panixerpass into the Vorder Rhine valley.
Suvorov started from Elm on October6, 1799 at four o'clock. Barely the cannons could move on the snowy path. The paths were icy, fog clouded the sight. The snow was reaching the knees. The soldiers went astray, slipped and fell into the depths. More than 200 people died at the crossing Panixerpass. 300 pack animals fell into the abyss. Completely exhausted, the troops reached the small viallage of Panix around midnight on October7. About 200 soldiers who did not survive during the march over the pass, were frozen to death in the bivouac, inside the pass.
The small village of Pigniu / Panix needed a hundred years (until 1901) to cancel the debts that had caused those days of the war.
Day 9
From Flims/Flem the bus takes the group along the valleys of the Flem, the Vorder Rhine and the Rhine to Chur (568 m). Then continues via St. Luxisteig to Liechtenstein. Via Vaduz we go on along the Rhine valley to Lake Constance. In Vaduz a small city tour is done by the city train. The trip takes half an hour. Through the historic city center the ride is passing the vineyards. At the Red House there is a stop to make a photo. From there you have a fantastic panoramic view of the Vaduz Castle. Then it goes into the green countryside around Vaduz. On the way back the Liechtenstein Stadium is passed by. From there the journey continues to Lindau. There the day ends with a final walk along the shore of Lake Constance. Map 247 T and 237 T.
In Lindau in 1799 the rest of Suvorov's army were united with the army of General Korsakov. 8000 soldiers were killed in fighting, frozen to death, starved, or fallen into the ravines. Militarily, the campaign has achieved nothing. Suvorov died on May18, 1800 in St. Petersburg.
Day 10
By bus we drive via Bregenz and Romanshorn along the southern shore of Lake Constance to Konstanz. In Konstanz we meet a city guide for the city tour "Presence of the Past". During the 1.5-hour tour we get to know the complexity of the Constance's past and present.
From Konstanz our bus brings us to the island of Mainau. The first traces of the settlement on the island of Mainau date back to 3000 BC. From this time the settlement is the existing settlement of six houses, which were exposed on the south bank of the Mainau. A moving story follows. The focus of the story is the Teutonic Knights. Their convent was moved in 1272 to Mainau and they extended the castle. In 1647 after the 30-year war, after a devastating defeat the island of Mainau fell at the hands of the Swedes, which withdrew from the island in 1649 . In 1739 the construction of the new castle began . After seven years of the construction, the Teutonic Knights Castle was completed in 1746. In 1827 Prince Nikolaus Esterházy bought the island and settled many rare plants there. It continued by Grand Duke Frederick I, a lover of plants, then various owners of various royal and ducal houses.
In 1932 Prince Lennart Bernadotte acquired the administration of Mainau, where he found his new home after his marriage to a commoner. Because of this marriage he abdicated all the titles and throne. From then he devoted himself to a systematical redesign of the island of Mainau. He opened it for the audience and made constant improvements and modernization.
Truly amazing things are on the island in abundance. First of all the botanical treasures! Parks and gardens, nature and plants of the island we can explore with all senses. The diversity of plants and trees make the island a unique park, experience - at any time of the year.
At 3:50 p.m. we take the boat back across Lake Constance to Lindau, where we will arrive around 6:50 p.m.
Day 11
Return from Lindau to Zurich by train. Return flight from Zurich.
It is possible to extend the tour with optional three-day stay in Zurich.
Add-on program
Day 4
During the bus ride for the less experienced hikers the Tell Chapel on the shores of Lake Lucerne will be visited on that day. It lies on the so-called Tellsplatte, the place where according to the legend, William Tell bounced out of the boat of Gessler. The chapel is decorated with four frescoes by Ernst Stückelberg, showing Rütli oath, the "Apple-Shot" and Gessler's death in the "Hohle Gasse".
Day 5
After arriving at Muotathal and checking-in at the hotel the group II makes an approximately 2-hour hike on the "Weatherman Trail". At 14 different stations on the way it is shown how from the imprints of nature weather rules are figured out. The hike on the "Weatherman Trail" is entertaining and offers wonderful opportunities to observe nature.
Day 6
The hiking group II goes by bus to the command fortress "Selgis A744" on the main road to Schwyz. The 1942/42 carved deeply into the rock fortress served as a command post for the staff of the large military formations. It leads 100 feet below the silicic-limestone rocks of the Fallenflue towards the Chlingentobel.
Besides these three the fortress substantially consists of 15 different work area, from light machine guns guarded, and with sluices provided entrances, emergency power and air conditioning, a small kitchen, a workshop, a guard room, telephone and telecommunications rooms and space for 93 people.
The cycle of murals of the famous painter Willi Koch is unique and noteworthy. In 1943/44 the infantryman Koch painted 13 large-scale paintings directly on the walls in different rooms. The pictures show the companions and contemporaries of the artist on duty and on vacation, in a marching column, in a pub or on a steamship. The pictures are the evidence and the dreams and desires of the soldiers during their active service.
The professional guided tour will take about 1 ½ hour.
Then the group drives to Oberarth. There you will experience the fascinating world of the oldest distillery of Switzerland in the original Swiss distillery Fassbind. Experience the unique world distillery: the steaming copper kettle, the characteristic aroma of fine spirits and the spirit of the 160-year history of distillery.
You will learn what you always wanted to know about the production of fine fruit brandies. Under the expert guidance you will take a look behind the scenes. Finally, you indulge your senses at the tasting of fine spirits.
Day 8
In Sargans the hiking group II interrupts their bus trip and walk along the wine route from Sargans to Mels where the bus will wait for them. The group is accompanied by a vintner from Mels or Sargans on this route . The way is 2.5 km long and it is marked with 15 panels connected with the history of viticulture. At the end of the hike a wine tasting of 5 different wines awaits the group (approximately 1-hour) .
